End World Hunger
The "your voice matters" piece was my very first time working with clay and glaze. I had just learned how to make the three different types of spoon rests, so I decided I would make a spoon rest for my first project. I used a coil spoon rest, and then decided to use black glaze. When I first started ceramics, glaze really confused me, because it was clear when I first put it on my piece, so I could never tell where I had already put it. The cause I decided to talk about was world hunger, because that affects people all over the world every single day. I decided to write 8.9% (690 million) on my piece, because that is how many people go to bed hungry every night.
A Piece of Texas
"A Piece of Texas" was my project idea for the dish for your dish project. I wanted to make a piece that represented my family, and I thought that making a piece that looked like Texas would do a good job. Texas is important to my family because both of my parents went to college at the University of Texas, my brother was born there. Most of my extended family also lives there, and I often go to Texas to see them. This was a piece that I hand built, and I made it during my first few weeks of ceramics. I chose black glaze because I was still experimenting with glaze when I made this piece, so I thought black would be the easiest color to use for practice. To make this piece, I made a slab and then traced out the shape of Texas with a needle.
Discover Your Path Project
My goal for the Discover Your Path project was to create three pieces that had a cohesive element. I decided to make three cylinders, each a different color and size. My cohesive element is that all three of my pieces can fit inside of each other. I also used this project as a way to experiment with different types of glazes, and also different ways to glaze my piece. I also wanted to try creating smaller pieces on the wheel, so that it why I wanted to make a few smaller cylinders. I made these pieces by creating the biggest cylinder first, and then using its size as a guide for how big to make my other two pieces. This project was a little difficult for me, but I think I learned a lot and also improved my ceramics abilities.
